The Living Nature of Leather

Leather is not simply a material it’s a living, breathing surface that evolves over time. Much like human skin, it’s porous and benefits from regular nourishment and protection. As it ages, it develops a soft patina, a natural sheen that reflects its journey with you.

At Alejandra Collective, we use only premium-quality leathers, such as full-grain, pebble, and suede, each chosen for its unique character and strength. Understanding the kind of leather your bag is made from is the first step in caring for it properly.

  • Full-grain leather: The highest quality leather available. It is strong, durable, and gains character as it develops its patina.

  • Smooth or pebble leather: Known for its even texture and elegant finish, these are easy to maintain and naturally resilient.

  • Suede leather: Soft, velvety, and delicate, suede requires special care to maintain its luxurious feel.

How to Care for Suede Leather

Suede is one of the most delicate materials we use across our collections and also one of the most beautiful. Its texture gives our designs a tactile, sophisticated appeal, but it does need extra care to maintain its charm.

Step-by-Step Care for Suede Leather

  1. Brush off loose dirt
Start by using a soft suede brush or cloth to remove dust and loose dirt. Always brush gently in the same direction to avoid damaging the fibres.

  2. Prepare a mild solution
Fill a basin with cold water and add a small amount of mild detergent or, preferably, a suede-specific leather shampoo.

  3. Spot clean carefully
Dampen a clean, soft cloth in the solution and lightly rub any soiled areas. Avoid soaking the suede, as excess water can leave marks.

  4. Rinse and dry
Use a second cloth dampened with clean cold water to remove soap residue. Allow your bag to air dry naturally never use a hairdryer or direct sunlight.

  5. Condition and protect
Once dry, apply a suede conditioner or protector specifically formulated for suede leather (look for a low pH product). This helps maintain softness and adds a layer of protection against moisture and stains.

Our Tip: Always store your suede bag in the dust bag provided and air it out occasionally to prevent moisture buildup. This also helps preserve the hardware and prevents tarnishing.

Caring for Full-Grain and Smooth Leather

Full-grain and smooth leathers are known for their durability and versatility. They age gracefully, developing character over time, and only require gentle, consistent maintenance.

Routine Leather Care

  • Clean regularly: Wipe your bag with a slightly damp, soft cloth to remove dust or surface dirt.

  • Condition every few months: Use a natural leather conditioner to keep the material hydrated and supple. Apply sparingly and buff gently with a clean cloth.

  • Avoid excessive moisture: If your bag gets wet, pat dry and allow it to air naturally. Never apply direct heat.

  • Protect from sunlight: Extended exposure to sunlight can fade colour and dry out the leather. Store your bag in a cool, dry place.

  • Use a leather protector: You can use a leather protector spray but ensure its formulated for the specific leather type you are treating.

Quick tip: Always test any new cleaner or conditioner on a small, hidden area before applying it to the entire bag.

Caring for Palm Straw and Natural Fibres

Our woven handbags are handcrafted from Iraca palm straw, a natural fibre that has been cultivated and woven by Colombian artisans for generations. The fibres are dyed using natural pigments derived from plants, roots, and minerals — making each piece unique and eco-conscious.

Because of their organic composition, palm straw bags require thoughtful care to preserve their structure and colour.

Palm Straw Care Tips

  • Keep dry: Palm straw is sensitive to moisture. Avoid heavy rain or submerging your bag in water. If it gets damp, blot gently with a soft cloth and allow it to air dry in a shaded area.

  • Spot clean: For light stains, use a soft cloth with a small amount of mild detergent diluted in cold water. Gently wipe the surface — never scrub.

  • Store with care: Keep your bag in its dust bag when not in use, and avoid stacking it under heavy items that may distort its shape.

  • Air occasionally: Natural fibres benefit from airflow. Let your bag breathe every few weeks to avoid humidity buildup and prevent mould.

Looking After Acrylic and Mixed-Material Bags

Some of our designs combine natural materials with modern elements like acrylic or leather trims. A blend of tradition and innovation that makes each bag distinct.

To care for these hybrid pieces:

  • Wipe gently: Use a clean microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints or dust from acrylic parts.

  • Avoid chemicals: Never use alcohol or ammonia-based cleaners, which can damage the surface.

  • Keep away from heat: Acrylic can warp if exposed to high temperatures or prolonged sunlight. Store your bag in a cool, shaded space.

The Importance of Regular Maintenance

Whether crafted from leather, palm straw, or a combination of materials, your handbag’s longevity depends on consistent care. Regular cleaning, conditioning, and proper storage not only preserve the appearance but also enhance the material’s texture and lifespan.

Leather, like skin, benefits from occasional nourishment. Natural fibers thrive when protected from excess moisture. Acrylic shines when kept clean and cool. These small rituals of care connect you more deeply to the craftsmanship behind every Alejandra Collective creation.  A reminder of the artisans’ skill and the slow, intentional process that brings each piece to life.

Final Thoughts: Love, Air, and Care

Your Alejandra Collective handbag isn’t just an accessory, it’s a wearable piece of art, crafted to accompany you through life’s journeys. With just a little time and care, it will remain a faithful companion, growing more beautiful with every passing season.

Always remember: love your bag, air your bag, and care for your bag.
